BMW opens 145 million euro logistics plant in Dingolfing

The BMW Group has massively expanded its infrastructure for the supply of its sales organisation worldwide with parts, accessories and lifestyle products. For this purpose, 145 million euros have been invested in the company's central logistics plant in Dingolfing. In the presence of the Bavarian Prime Minister, Dr. Edmund Stoiber, the Dynamics Centre, as it is known, was officially handed over for its intended use. The expansion had become necessary because parts distribution is also moving into a new dimension due to the company's ongoing product and market offensive. With this project, the company is ensuring that the premium performance promise is kept worldwide for the entire service life of every vehicle.

Because of the expansion of the product and brand portfolio, the number of parts needed has grown considerably. For every BMW or MINI vehicle sold, original parts and accessories are available for at least 15 years after the model has been phased out. The same applies for BMW motorcycles. This means that in the last five years alone the number of items has risen from around 165,000 to 240,000. Following the launch of two additional model series from 2008, this figure will rise further in the next few years to reach nearly 300,000 articles.

Sophisticated logistics now make it possible for articles to be delivered over night within Germany. Within Europe, the service takes 24 hours maximum. In other regions, it is around 72 hours – if the required part is not available in one of the 36 local distribution centres that have been set up worldwide. The Dynamics Centre, which covers a site area totalling 560,000 square metres, currently employs around 650 people.

Dr. Norbert Reithofer, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG: "For the BMW Group, premium does not stop when the customer drives out of the dealership in his new vehicle. Our premium brands show their value at the dealership after purchase too."

The motto for today's opening event is "efficient logistics with more rotational energy". It describes the claim made by the Dynamic Centre. Some 1,800 suppliers from all over the world deliver their goods to the Central Parts Delivery Unit in Dingolfing. Every single item is quality tested, checked and stored. When an order is received by the dealership organisation or one of the distribution centres, the items are brought together, packed and sent out the same day, thus ensuring rapid deliveries to the over 3,700 dealers worldwide. This happens 35 to 40 thousand times a day. Goods intake and output per day comes to a total of up to 500 trucks and 60 marine freight containers which are transported by rail. Every year, goods with a total volume of 1.4 million cubic metres are handled. The largest building on the new site is the logistics hall, covering 125,000m². The area of all the buildings is 156,000m², and the warehouses are up to eighteen metres high.

The choice of Dingolfing as the location for the centre is partly connected with its proximity to the largest factory in the BMW Group. Parts of the range, such as large pressed components, are manufactured in the neighbouring BMW Dingolfing plant and then sent out from the Dynamic Centre.

Today, the new plant is already used to almost full capacity. It is proposed that a further 20 million euros will be spent on further expansion in the next few years. Altogether, the BMW Group is planning investments totalling around 19 billion euros group-wide in the coming five-year period.
